Strange Secrets

At the door when they were waiting to go outside, Rex looked down at Buster. “You feel like explaining what we just saw?”

Buster sniggered, and when the door opened, he bounded outside without offering an answer.

“Hey, wait up,” barked Lila, rushing to keep up.

Rex let the bulldog get away from the front of the hotel, but once they were on the grass, he got in front of him and forced Buster to stop.

“Come on. Spill,” he demanded.

Lila trotted around Buster so she was facing him too. “Yeah, what was that? You were talking to your human, and she answered. How did you do that?”

Buster lowered his back end onto the grass. There were very few animals who knew about his human’s unique skill, and it wasn’t so much that he tried to keep it quiet, more that Felicity tried her best to only talk to him when they were alone.

That wasn’t always possible, of course, as today had shown.

“She can understand me,” he told the two dogs. “Don’t ask me how, and it’s just her, no one else.”

Lila couldn’t believe her ears. “That is beyond bizarre.”

Rex couldn’t help but doubt the bulldog’s claim. “Your human can understand you?”

“Not just me,” Buster explained. “Felicity can hear the cat too.”

“You’re serious?” Lila found herself vacillating between outright disbelief and unparalleled excitement.

“She can’t hear anyone else though. Not so far, at least, and she couldn’t hear us when we first moved in with her. It started a couple of weeks later.”

Unable to shift the doubt, Rex chose to leave the subject for now and test it out later. To him it seemed more likely that what he’d just witnessed was a quirk of good timing; the bulldog’s human supplying an answer that made it sound like she’d understood what Buster said.

Dismissing it for now, Rex said, “I still need to sample the Pomeranian’s scent. Can you help me with that?”

“Why don’t we just get him to ask the humans?” asked Lila, sniggering at her own joke.

Buster frowned. “Because its only Felicity who can hear me and she doesn’t know where Ernie is,” he pointed out, Lila’s joke going straight over his head. “Honestly, Cherry Bomb, if you want to be a superhero sidekick, you need to pay more attention.”

Before Lila could respond, Rex butted in, “Can we get on with the task in hand? I need you to take me to somewhere I will be able to identify Ernie’s scent. Can you do that?” Rex’s desire to get the show moving was unambiguous and his tone made that abundantly clear.

“All right, all right,” Buster set off, aiming to skirt the hotel, and come back in through the patio on the other side. “Keep your fur on.”

“Where are we going?” asked Lila, trotting along beside the bulldog.

Buster flicked his head back to the main doors. “There’s too much human traffic that way. Someone will intercept us, wondering where our humans are, and that will just slow us down. We need to get up to the bridal suite; that's where Ernie was hanging out.
